We have a wide range of canoes and kayaks available at the centre. From traditional style Native American canoes through to short stumpy playboats and purpose built sprint and slalom trainers. We also have three Bell Boats that take up to 12 people in each to get a very stable introduction to paddling and a fantastic team build exercise.

Sessions with our qualified staff are available to book in different craft for schools and groups throughout the year.

Canoes, kayaks or bell boats make fantastic birthday party sessions for all abilities (ages 8 and up).

We have an after school club for young people that meets on a Wednesday from April to October. There is an all ages local club that meets at the lake on Saturday mornings.

Have a Go Sessions (BCU paddle sport Start):

A half day course aimed at providing a very basic introduction to paddle sport. Emphasis is very much on having fun in the boats. A fantastic course for those who have had little or no experience of canoeing or kayaking. These courses are aimed at all ages so why not book in with your children who can get their Paddle Power Start certificate at the same time?

Courses for Adults

Introduction to paddle sport (BCU 1 Star):

A full day course to give an introduction to the skills needed to move a canoe or kayak effectively on the water. The course will also cover some simple theory on safety and equipment. Demonstrating a controlled capsize and swim from a boat is likely to be a part of this course. Satisfactory completion of the syllabus on the day will lead to candidates being awarded their BCU 1 Star award.

Experience Required:  Some previous experience in canoes or kayaks may be useful      but is not essential

Improvers paddle sport (BCU 2 Star):

A 2 day course for those who have already got to grips with the basic skills in canoes and kayaks. The course will focus on improving skills in both canoes and kayaks with the aim of making candidates competent paddlers on flat water. The course will also introduce techniques for rescuing other paddlers from the water. Satisfactory completion of the syllabus will lead to candidates being awarded their BCU 2 Star.

Experience Required: Previous paddling experience essential. Should be paddling at a standard above the requirements of the BCU 1 Star award. In order to complete the 2 Star, candidates will need to have paddled on a journey or at an event in another location.

BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT)

A 1 day course to provide a good grounding in safety and rescue techniques for paddling in a flat water environment. Attendance on FSRT course is a requirement for those who want to register to take a BCU coaching award.

Experience Required:  Candidates should be paddling at a 2 star standard in order to get the most from the award. Candidates should also be confident swimming wearing a buoyancy aid and be over the age of 14.

Courses for Young People

Paddle Power Passport

Aimed at under 14s this is a staged award, breaking the skills of the BCU 1 Star down in to manageable sized chunks. Completion of level 5 is recognised as the equivalent to an adult’s BCU 1 Star.

Youth Paddle Sport Sessions

For ages 8-16. Weekly 2 hour sessions with qualified coaches. No set programme but we will attempt to push young people to improve their personal skills. A great way of working towards a learning a new sport or pushing towards that next award. Ideal for those who want to use paddling as a sport for GCSE or as a part of a Duke of Edinburgh Award.
