The
Gym and Pool at Fullwell Cross -
Tony's first time in the Gym!! | My first time in The Gym
I am forty one years old and a little on the heavy side - actually, to be
honest, I am quite over weight and not happy about the fact anymore.
Because of my size I have had type 2 diabetes for four years now and although
I take tablets it is not under control, and it worries me that if I do not
start making an effort to get fit and reduce my weight I will not be around
to see my four year old grow up!! With this in mind I have decided that
now is the time to make an effort and become healthier using the gym at
Fullwell Cross.
As we all know there is one simple fact to being fat, yes a horrible word
but the truth, and that is if you eat more calories than you burn off you
put weight on. So using this simple rule I need to do more exercise and
eat less calories to reduce my weight.
So along with trying to keep to a 1500 calorie a day diet I had my first
session at the Fullwell Cross gym last week and my next session is tonight,
24th August. |
| I
am not someone that usually frequents the gym and have felt intimidated
at other gyms in the past, but from the moment you walk in to the
gym at Fullwell Cross you find friendly staff that are there to help,
and a great view over the swimming pool from the floor to ceiling
windows which let in great light.
On the first visit to the gym you are given an induction to make sure
you are aware of the safety issues of each piece of equipment along
with how they work allowing you to get the most out of your use of
the gym |
| The
gym is laid out over two floors with the main exercise equipment being
on both so if downstairs gets a little busy you can move upstairs
where the same selection of machines are available.
I was shown around each machine which include concept 2 rowers, bikes,
treadmills and cross trainers that can all be set for different workouts
to suit all levels of fitness and the machines on the lower floor
even have their own screens built in for you to while away the time
watching Neighbours or Corrie etc. | |
| There are also large
screens on both floors for you to watch while you train and the radio
was playing in the background to give a lively feel to the place. Along with the fitness
machines there is a selection of resistance weight stations that help
you to tone your new found muscles (and had I found a few the next morning!!!),
plus stretching areas and room for many other exercises to help you lose
those pounds and get fit.
| | I spent over an hour on my first session learning
each machine and then spending some time on the treadmill and crosstrainer
and now know what I want to do each time I go so that hopefully not
so much of me will sit down to Christmas dinner in four months time.
I have quite alot to lose but the gym seems a great place for everybody
who wants to get and stay fit and I can see I will be spending a good
few late afternoons there over the coming months - why not come along
and join me! |
| Just
so that you can follow my progress I will give you a few details about me.
I am 6 foot 2 tall which is 185cm and weigh 112 kilos. I started at 116
but have been on a diet for three weeks now. My first goal is to be 110
kilos and then to get to 100 kilos by the end of the year which is achievable
but will take hard work and dedication.
I will post on here at least once a week to let people know how I am getting
on but seriously - why not come and join me? We can all help each other
along with our goals and maybe become brave enough to join a few fitness
classes that are run at the centre or take a trip to the new spa.
Thanks for reading my first post and I hope you decide to come along and
give the gym a go at Fullwell Cross. To find out more about joining the
gym contact [email protected]
and to find out when I am in the gym next or to tell us about your fitness
successes email me on [email protected]
Thanks Tony

First rule of exercise - Don't overdo it!!!
Ouch that hurts, the first thoughts I had as I opened my eyes this morning and considered getting out of bed. I had my second session in the gym last night and really enjoyed my time on the treadmill and cross-trainer along with a spell on the rowing machine. The problem seems to be that what with swimming over a mile on Saturday, trying a run through the fields Sunday, a mile swim Monday morning and an hour in the gym my body was not happy.
I got home last night and suddenly felt terrible. However much you want to get fit you need to remember that those extra pounds were the product of alot of eating over many years and are not all going to come off with a couple of weeks exercise. I have now promised to train at the gym three times a week and to cut out the running for a while which seems more sensible.
Dieticians will tell you that a good rate of weight loss is 1-1.5 pounds a week and if you drop much more than this it is likely to go back on so this is now my target.
Back to the gym tomorrow evening at 5pm. if you want to join me call the reception and find out how you can join or come along and say hello if you are already a member.

Nearly Back
There is nothing worse than an injury is not there all the time but comes back and bites you when you really do not expect it.
I came off of the treadmill after jogging for quite a while feeling like I could take on the world as you do after exercise and decided to lift some weights on the machine. I sit down, grab hold of the bar, pull down and...wwooowwww. The pain in my shoulder and arm was like nothing I have felt before. But within 20 minutes it had gone and my arm felt fine.
And that is how I have been left for the last 5 or 6 weeks. No problems until I try and do anything with my arm and then - whack!! The doctor tells you to rest it and thats OK but for the rest of your life!?!
I have been swimming two or three times a week to keep it moving and intend to get back to the gym to see how it goes within the next week or so. I am just glad that Fullwell Cross has got such a fantastic swimming pool for all of us to use.
